In brief
Carbamazepine is prescribed for certain epileptic seizures, for idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (sudden facial pain) and for mania and maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder.
Conditions treated with carbamazepine
Partial seizures (simple or complex), generalised seizures with a tonic-clonic element and mixed seizure patterns are the epilepsy types in the healthdirect entry for Teril. Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, mania and the maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder complete the list. Teril can be used alone or with other epilepsy medicines.
This listing shows carbamazepine 100 mg, 200 mg and 400 mg. It does not name the manufacturer of the tablets supplied, so check the label on the pack you receive and confirm with your prescriber or pharmacist that it matches your prescription.
200 mg: price per unit by pack
Compare packs of the same strength. These examples are for 200 mg and are calculated from the listed prices at the shop’s Australian-dollar rate on 8 October 2026, before delivery or other checkout charges.
| Strength | Pack size | Pack price | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200 mg | 30 | A$40.21 | A$1.34 |
| 200 mg | 120 | A$112.04 | A$0.93 |
| 200 mg | 360 | A$290.17 | A$0.81 |
Relative to the 30 pack, each unit costs about 30.3% less in the 120 pack and 39.9% less in the 360 pack.
A lower price per tablet means a larger upfront payment. Choose only the quantity and strength appropriate to your prescription, and check the expiry date. Prices can change, so confirm the current pack price before ordering.
What it does not treat
According to healthdirect, carbamazepine does not work in absence, atonic or myoclonic seizures, is unsuitable for status epilepticus, and is not intended for minor facial pain or headaches.
Australian brands
Tegretol, from sponsor Novartis, is made as 100 mg and 200 mg tablets, 200 mg and 400 mg controlled-release (CR) tablets, and a suspension. healthdirect lists Teril, an uncoated 200 mg tablet, as a Schedule 4 medicine. The formulation of the product supplied here is not specified.
Contraindications and precautions
The Tegretol consumer medicine information rules out carbamazepine with allergy to it, blood disorders, severe liver disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, AV block or hepatic porphyria, and with tricyclic antidepressants or MAO inhibitors.
Patients of Han Chinese or Thai ancestry may be blood-tested first, given a risk of serious skin reactions. There may be a risk of birth defects in pregnancy. Tegretol reduces the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, so extra non-hormonal contraception is needed alongside hormonal methods. The leaflet also says to steer clear of alcohol and grapefruit juice.
Taking it and possible side effects
The Tegretol leaflet describes taking the tablets with water during or after a meal, usually two or three times daily as directed, without crushing CR tablets. It lists, without frequencies, effects including drowsiness, dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, weight gain, swelling, hair loss, fever, blurred or double vision, poor coordination, confusion, depression, agitation and skin reactions.
Storage
Keep Tegretol dry and below 30 °C. Follow the storage directions on the pack you receive.
